Children's sports have become very competitive and seem to be year round. I am seeing many more sports related injuries in children due to this competitiveness. Some children are being pushed to their limits and injury has more to do with repetition and overload. Some children play one sport all year round which is a disadvantage. This creates repetitive injuries and overuse syndromes. Children should be rotating sports and if injured, taken out of the game and practice until fully healed.
I see many children going for personal training and unfortunately there are many bad trainers out there. It is very important that the trainer be certified In the "youth population" or exercise physiology and more importantly, go by referral, the trainer had better know what he is talking about. Youth growth plates are not fully formed, can easily injured by inappropriate exercise and can cause problems for the child as he/she grows if injured.
If your child has a past injury, a chiropractor who specializes in sports injuries can help to get them back into the game.
In my office we do assessments looking for the cause and cure of a prior injury and then provide exercise that is safe and appropriate to the child's body type and sport played.
