The Carpal Tunnel Fix
carpal tunnel? Want to avoid carpal tunnel surgery? Read this! Pain in the hand and wrist can be a major issue and a debilitating injury to have. It can inhibit your work and make your days awful. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition affecting the hands and arms where sensations like numbness and tingling are experienced among other symptoms. The condition is triggered by excess pressure on the median nerve in the wrist and can be caused by the anatomy of the wrist, patterns of hand use and certain underlying health problems. Compression of the affected nerve causes the numbness and tingling and a prolonged condition can cause the hand to become weakened over time. However, with timely detection and intervention most individuals who develop the carpal tunnel syndrome can regulate the associated sensations and fully restore normal wrist and hand function. There is plenty of adjustments and muscle work that can be done to help this issue. There are also plenty of exercises that can help prevent carpel tunnel or eliminate the need for surgery.
Join our workshop: "The Carpal Tunnel Fix" is a 6 week program that will be given in small groups. Exercise Physiologist Steven Gonnelli will be teaching this workshop using the Synergy Technique of muscle rebalancing. You will take home a healthy wrist, natural nutritional information on decreasing carpal tunnel inflammation, and a home exercise plan for life. This program will start the first week of April. I am always asked, "What exercise is best to do on a regular basis?" My answer is clear. Cross-training. I have patients who only do yoga, only do spin, only cross-fit , only body build or only swim. The truth of the matter is when you only do one type of exercise, you are doing yourself a dis-service and setting yourself up for either injury or illness due to muscle imbalance or overuse type injuries. Our bodies like and need to move in various ways to function well. Isometric holds and pulsing movements common in Pilates and Barre; and isometric holds in yoga, focus on core stability and posture. These exercises improve stabilization, core engagement, and postural awareness but are not likely to increase muscle mass or functional strength. Large , dynamic movements, such as Olympic lifts and body building, use a full range of motion and can be incorporated into functional exercises . These movements increase bone density and strength for daily situations, like lifting your groceries or your kids! Adding weights to these pther types of exercises give the most gain in strength and muscle development. Body building and power lifting will both benefit by adding isometrics such as yoga, and help to add strength by adding length to a muscle. Cross training is the key to creating a strong and healthy body. Daily rotation of all types of exercise; pulsing, strength training, isometrics, aerobic, is the key to staying fit, healthy and most important, a non-boring routine.

That advice is based on Comstock’s research findings. During two academic years, athletic trainers took a series of measurements of the heads and four measurements of neck
strength of 6,704 student athletes— boys and girls who played lacrosse, soccer and basketball. Then they recorded all incidents of injuries—including concussions—that occurred with every subject.
When they examined their data, Athletes who experienced concussions had smaller neck circumferences
than did their fellow players and frequently had a small neck paired with a large head. Those injured also had less neck strength than did athletes who did not suffer a concussion. According to Gregory, overall neck strength remained a significant predictor of concussion. For every one pound increase in neck strength, odds of concussion fell by 5%. This is a dramatic prevention tool. The one problem that one may run into, is how to strengthen properly.
